This week, Extra Help celebrates its 11th birthday! Where has the time gone?
When Extra Help was established 11 years ago, there was a definite gap in the market for a one-stop shop that not only provided cleaning, but a wide range of home-help services too. I specifically wanted to help people within my own community, who were elderly or vulnerable, by providing them with honest, reliable and flexible home-help services that would enable them to live in their own homes for longer. Extra Help for the Elderly was first launched in Plymouth and Milton Keynes and was extremely well received.
In fact, it soon became clear that there were many other types of people who needed a helping hand. In response, we expanded our services to include Extra Help for Parents, to include looking after children, school runs etc., and Extra Help for Everyone, which focuses on helping busy workers and professionals keep on top of day-to-day tasks in and around the home.
When I started my little home-help business, I had no idea it would eventually grow to become a strong network of 35 franchisees across the UK, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved so far. Along the way, I’ve learnt many lessons, which I’ve been able to pass onto our franchisees to ensure they benefit from my experience and fast-track their way to success.
It’s all about the people
We have so much to be proud of! Despite the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, not only did we survive as a business, but we actually managed to grow our network significantly, as people started searching for a pandemic-proof, recession-resilient business opportunity. Our existing family of franchisees worked tirelessly during lockdown to provide assistance to their clients, even when they couldn’t enter their houses. I heard so many heart-warming stories about how our franchisees were helping clients with services such as shopping, dog-walking and gardening, which clients particularly appreciated when they were self-isolating. The flexibility of Extra Help meant that franchisees were able to quickly respond to the market and promote those services that could continue uninterrupted, despite lockdown. Read our franchisees’ stories here.
In the past year, we’ve recruited some fantastic new franchisees, whose businesses are already flying. In particular, Charlie Hawkes, who owns Extra Help in North and Mid Devon, deserves a special mention. Charlie recruited 7 new clients within his first month and is off to an amazing start. It’s an undisputed fact – if you’re willing to put in the effort, this business works!
I’d like to thank all of our franchisees for your commitment and ongoing efforts to curate and grow the Extra Help brand. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work with such a caring and passionate group of people! Your willingness to help and learn from each other is magical and I’m looking forward to celebrating your achievements with you over the coming year.
